MERIDEN — Schools will make counseling available to students, families and staff following Wednesday’s fatal collision involving a crossing guard, according to Mayor Kevin Scarpati’s statement carried by WFSB.
The guard was struck near 391 Broad Street and Olive Street shortly before 9 a.m. October 14 and died after being taken to a hospital, the station reports, citing police. Investigators withheld his identity pending family notification.
Scarpati said the guard helped children reach Israel Putnam Elementary School. To the mayor’s knowledge, no children were present during the collision. That qualified statement is not an independently established finding by this newsroom.
WFSB reports that the driver remained at the scene. Police and Connecticut’s Occupational Health and Safety Division are investigating. The report does not establish fault or announce charges.
The district’s 2026–27 budget separately identifies crossing guards as an in-kind service supplied by the city. That official document explains the municipal role in school safety; it does not confirm the circumstances of this collision.
Police seek witnesses and dash-camera recordings, according to WFSB, which gives 203-630-6201 as the contact number. This update adds the school-support response to the existing article; a separate original police release was not obtained.
