NEW LONDON — Police are asking for help identifying a person recorded placing a dog over the six-foot perimeter fence at the city animal shelter early Monday, October 12.
Police Chief Brian Wright’s October 12 release places the incident at about 1:49 a.m. at the shelter on Chester Street. Security footage recorded a person putting the dog over the six-foot perimeter fence and leaving.
The dog was later found hiding behind a bush. An animal-control officer coaxed it out, and police said the animal was evaluated, is safe and remains in the shelter’s care.
Police said investigators want to speak with the person about the circumstances. No arrest or charge had been announced in the reviewed reports. Wright said abandoning an animal in that manner may violate Connecticut cruelty and abandonment laws.
The department’s October 12 Facebook release says Animal Control accepts surrendered animals through proper intake procedures during business hours, with emergency arrangements available by phone. It urges anyone who recognizes the individual, knows the dog’s owner or saw overnight activity near the Chester Street shelter to call 860-447-5231.
The published accounts from CT Insider, WFSB and Josh Lanier draw on police information; they are not separate eyewitness accounts. No later suspect identification, arrest or court outcome has been verified in the reviewed material.
