WINDHAM — Two adults and a dog were displaced when a three-alarm fire destroyed a Jerusalem Road log cabin Sunday, October 18. NBC Connecticut’s later report says no one was injured and the fire was extinguished after a lengthy response.
Windham Center Fire Department’s original dispatch notice places the call at 8:07 a.m., between Riverdale Drive and Myers Road. Its 10 a.m. announcement said firefighters were still responding and cancelled the department’s annual memorial ceremony.
WFSB’s earlier account described flames knocked down while fire remained inside the collapsing structure. It reported that the occupants escaped before crews arrived. Those statements describe an earlier stage of the response, rather than an active-fire assessment for Sunday evening.
NBC Connecticut subsequently reported that firefighters needed more than an hour to bring the blaze under control and approximately another hour to extinguish it. Collapsed sections left concealed hot spots requiring extensive overhaul. The station reported mutual aid from 14 towns.
The NBC account, citing Windham Center Fire Chief Stanley Maclure for the initial fire progression, describes a porch already burning when crews arrived and flames spreading into the front of the house. The station says the home was deemed uninhabitable.
WFSB reported that the Red Cross and Windham Social Services were helping the family and described the home as a total loss. Its earlier response count was roughly 40 to 50 people from 12 agencies, with five tankers supplying water. That earlier agency count and NBC’s later town count describe different measures and stages of the response.
NBC relayed the homeowner’s account of moving a log from a wood stove to the porch and a possible connection to the fire’s origin. That is a reported preliminary account, not an established cause. The station says the fire marshal is continuing to investigate.
NBC Connecticut’s October 18 report also says Connecticut State Police responded and took several firearms found inside the home. The report does not explain why the firearms were taken or identify any related charges. Eastern CT News has not obtained a police incident record establishing that context.
WFSB reported a road closure during the response. A later reopening time has not been verified; neither the earlier closure nor the extinguishment report establishes current road access. Eastern CT News has not independently assessed the scene.
Update October 18, 9:10 p.m. EDT: Added NBC Connecticut’s later account of extinguishment, no injuries, displacement and continued cause investigation. The full original report was read directly. This supersedes the earlier unresolved fire-control status while preserving the original article, publication date and channel delivery history.
Update October 19, 5:08 AM EDT: Added the firearms detail from NBC Connecticut’s October 18 report, which was reread in full. This is an addition to the account of Sunday’s response, not a newly confirmed arrest, illegal-possession finding or change in the fire’s cause.
